What Are Articles?

An article is a small word placed before a noun to show whether we mean something general or something specific. Click each part of the diagram below.

Indefinite articles introduce something new. The definite article points at something already known.

Used for one, non-specific thing — the listener doesn't know exactly which one.

Used before words that begin with a consonant sound — including tricky "yoo" and "wun" sounds hiding behind vowel letters.

✓Before consonant sounds: a boy, a dog, a house
✓Before a "Y" sound: a university, a European, a uniform
✓Before a "W" sound: a one-time offer, a once-in-a-lifetime event
✓With singular countable nouns: a book, a plan
✓Mentioning something for the first time: "I met a teacher today."
✓With professions: a doctor, a teacher, an engineer*
✓With nationalities (consonant sound): a French person, a German

✓Before vowel letters that sound like vowels: apple, egg, orange, umbrella

One-of-a-kind = automatic THE.

If there's only one in the whole world (the sun), only one in the room (the door), or you already agreed which one — it's always "the." No exceptions to memorize, just ask: "do we both already know which one?"

The President Signs A New Bill Into Law

Both marked words use different logic: "The President" is unique and known; "a new bill" is being introduced for the first time.

Book Excerpt

It was a dark and stormy night. The wind howled outside.

First mention gets "a" (a night — one of many possible nights). The second sentence uses "the" because we're now talking about that specific night.

Movie Quote

"I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse."

"Offer" begins with the vowel sound /ɒ/, so it takes "an" — regardless of the sentence's dramatic weight.

The Vowel-Song Trick

Sing the vowels: A-E-I-O-U. If a word's first sound is one of these, reach for "an." If it's anything else, it's "a."

The Whisper Test

Whisper the next word before you speak. If your mouth opens freely (vowel sound) → "an." If your lips, tongue, or teeth block the air (consonant sound) → "a."

Ask: "Would my listener know exactly which one I mean?" Yes → "the." No, could be any → "a/an."
